Drafttek.com lead programmer Warren Hauck here. Pondering a new “P code”. To review some existing codes and their meanings:
If one of our correspondents codes a position as P2, that means:
2 (or P2) – PP’s designated with P2 indicate that the that the team is in great need of starting calliber talent and will reach to fill the need. The reach isn’t quite as great as P1. There can be multiple P2’s identified per team.
A P3 OTOH means:
3 (P3) – PP’s (Player Positions) designated with P3 indicate that the team is in need of starting caliber talent, but will not reach for it. Some teams use a “best available player” draft discipline, this fits the P3 code well.
In looking at the Rams, they’ve got a huge amout of starting caliber needs. So many that they cannot all be filled via the draft. But it’s the QB need where there may be a void. Robert (Rams correspondent) codes QB as P3. Now, I’m guessing that if you need a QB, you need to look extra hard to get one. If one is not chosen in the first three rounds, I think that perhaps the priority should be increased in, say, round 4.
We have a transitional code in P5:
5 (P5) – The P5 code is used to identify positional needs that the team absolutely wants to fill (within reason), but does not want to invest a high draft pick. P5 PP’s start the simulation as an equivalent to P4 (depth needs), but in the 4th round all P5 PP’s are promoted to P3. Thus the chances of the PP’s getting a player fill increase dramatically in the 4th round.
I would propose a new code, perhaps the unused P7, which might read:
P7’s start out on the same level as P3. But in the 4th round, if there has not been a selection made at the position, the need escalates to P2 (or even P1) . The GM’s line of thinking: “I want to get a QB (as an example) in the draft, one capable of starting. In the first three rounds, we’ll weigh QB against our other starter needs, and select the best option. But if by the 4th round a QB has not been selected, I would like to escalate the needs to get a QB – but I will not excessively overreach”
Thus this proposed P7 would be similar in execution to P5, but used for higher needs.
Let me know what you think.
